A female connector has a surrounding shroud which accepts the body of the matching, or mating, male connector. We tough engineers stopped giggling about this decades ago - honest.

Confusingly, with some designs it is possible for a female connector bodyshell to be fitted with pins and the equivalent male bodyshell to have matching holes: take a close look at your electric kettle lead next time you brew up.
