|
|
I have been playing with Linux on and off for years but never really got anywhere because I never had any real problems with hardware.
Now I have finally managed to get my shiny new laptop (AMD Turion64, HP Pavillion dv8000, ATIXpress200M) to run a distro properly!!
It has been a struggle, I have installed and uninstalled several distros but none of them seemed to work properly. Mostly it was graphics related issues but with Suse, everything is perfect, even the 1280x800 resolution).
The only issue I have now is that I have no internet connectivity - not one bit. The drivers seem to be installed for the ethernet card and the data light even blinks occassionally but no trafic?! And then there's the wifi... Broadcom chipset, won't even entertain it. There is a button on the laptop to turn it on and off and that is also dead.
Any suggestions guys?

My first guess it that it may be ACPI causing the issue. Post the output from dmesg and we'll see if we can figure it out _________________ Need a New Signature |

I have posted the output below. I have to use the boot options pci-noacpi and acpi=force else it won't boot. Maybe there is something I am missing. Any advice would be gratefully receieved.
Thanks,
Bootdata ok (command line is root=/dev/hda4 vga=0x317 selinux=0 acpi=force resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent pci=noacpi)

OK first thing, which Im sure you've noticed is there is a lot of APIC errors. Secondly your PCMCIA slots have been disabled because of an IRQ issue. As far as I can see your network card has been detected without error. The issue with your power button is likely to be ACPI related.
First we'll try and deal with the network card, then we'll take a looka t the other bits and bobs.
As root run
ifconfig
from a console, you should see information for a device eth0. If not then try ifconfig eth0
if you still see nothing this partially explains the lack of connectivity.
next try pinging 127.0.0.1 although this may ping the loopback device, so you may see a reply from that instead of the net device.
(Incidentally most things I say will be from the console, I have not used SuSe much, so its easier for me to explain in this way)
next try pinging your router (I doubt this will work, but always worth a try)
do you use static IPs or DHCP?
If your router has a DHCP server in it, and you are currently usign a static address then try running
dhcpcd eth0
if you get a command not found then it may be you have pump instead of dhcpcd
pump eth0
then try pinging the router, and perhaps google if that works. _________________ Need a New Signature |

There is now a driver for the Broadcom wireless chipset, but it has not made it into the kernel yet. You can get it from http://bcm43xx.berlios.de _________________ "Do not handicap your children by making their lives easy."

I have a dv8025 and I find the ACPI BIOS often gets a little fubar'd. I will share with you what I have found. At the very least I would suggest you edit your '/boot/grub/menu.lst' and add 'acpi=noirq' as a kernel option, i.e. so it looks a little like : | Code: | title Work
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 vga=0x317 selinux=0 resume=/dev/hda7 splash=silent showopts acpi=noirq
initrd /boot/initrd
|
Mine would often fail to boot without this.
WRT the wireless, did you install SUSE 64-bit or 32-bit? The broadcom chip will only work if you use NDIS wrapper. NDIS wrapper uses NDIS drivers (Windows XP wifi drivers). You can only use the wireless in 64-bit Linux if you have 64-bit XP drivers (which are fewer and farther between than opensource Linux drivers IMHO), I never found any suitable 64-bit XP drivers which would work, so I reinstalled SUSE in 32-bit mode - and used the drivers which came on the CD with the laptop (AFAIK HP do not offer any 64-bit drivers for this laptop). I can give you instructions on how to do this but I am at work at the moment. You are free to try these instructions on 64-bit SUSE but the probably won't work (let me know if they do, and I will re-install my as 64-bit)
BTW you didn't specify wireless network - hence shifty_ben's responses, but I seem to recall that the wired networking works out of the box, even in 64-bit. The wifi button does not seem to do anything in Linux, you could probably map it to do something in KDE, but I haven't bothered.
For a long time (3 1/2 months), I didn't manage to get the ATI graphics will not working accelerated, 2D was fine. I tried ATI's proprietary drivers but X-Windows would just freeze every time the system booted, and manually starting X (using startx) would just cause it to load the unaccelerated drivers. Finally I read some where that it works if you go into the BIOS and share 128 MB of system RAM with the existing 128 MB video RAM, this worked for me but I never tried it with ATI's 64-bit drivers.
I do find sometimes when switching between X and Console that the screen goes funny, but switch back and forwards seems to fix it. Also if try to convert CD to MP3 the trackpad goes crazy if I touch it. Also the default settings for the track pad are very sensitive, I find synclient fixes that well, I use 'synclient fingerlow=50 fingerhigh=57 accelfactor=0.0025 minspeed=0.06 maxspeed=0.21' (run it in a terminal window).
I will try to get back to you with instructions for NDIS wrapper. Even with all the glitches, I have been very happy with this laptop.
BTW did you know that Quickplay software (actived by pressing the DVD button whilst the machine is switched off) is Linux based?
** Nelz, I just spotted your post, very exciting not to have to rely on NDIS any more for this card. I am tempted to partition a little space and try reinstalling SUSE 64-bit (if it works I can copy the system to my main large partition). |

Right then - we move forward! Jhooks - thanks for the advice on the bootloader edit - it worked.
Now, the network.... I tried exactly what shifty-ben said and when I type ifconfig, I get a host of information which shows me the ipaddress of the laptop and everything looks normal. When I ping the router it takes an age to respond but does respond eventually.
I ran firefox and the novell homepage (havent changed it yet) started to load but then simply stopped.
I then tried to log in to my router and it said that the connection was refused. Clearly, there is connectivity there but they just don't want to speak. I can't find anything wrong with the router settings when I log in under windoze but I have set up a static address and I will now try to get it talking to Linux again.
This is a real pain in t'arse because I keep having to reboot to access this forum in xp.
Any other ideas??
Other thing, got the advice on the broadcom driver issue but where do I start... I downloaded the latest snapshot file as detailed above and on http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/ as suggested by Nelz but now what.
Sorry for being a bit dim but like I said, never had problems before so please treat me as a noob.

More info - I am now really confused. If I boot the system and as soon as KDE comes up I click the firefox icon then the novell home page loads perfectly. If I try to click on a link it just sits there and does nothing as before.
If I wait 30 seconds before clicking on firefox after KDE loads then I can't even get the novell homepage.

Interesting, sounds like something KDE is doing thats causing the problem, I found that on my Thinkpad KDE accessed the soundcard and caused an IRQ conflict, but as the device is still seen I don't think its that.
if you log into a console rather than going into KDE how do you fair? _________________ Need a New Signature |

Haven't tried it. Do you mean boot into a console? I will give it a go and see what happens. I suppose all I will be able to do is ping sites though? I will post an updated output from dmesg if you think it might help. _________________ It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. If you have links, links2 or lynx installed you will be able to browse (assumin connection is working)
The xorg log could be useful as KDE seems to be the troublemaker though I doubt it will show anything useful, still worth a look _________________ Need a New Signature |

I am still getting nowhere here and I am becoming increasingly frustrated. The same thing happens when I log in as root, firefox starts, opens the home page then (if I am quick enough) I can click on a random link and it will open that page then will go no further.
I have cheked all the settings and I think they look ok but to be honest I don't know. They look the same as I would set them up in windows and I have even tried turning the fiewalll off and still the same thing happens.
You may have to give me more explicit guidance, where is the output for xorg? How do I get it?
When I log in to a console only, I still get the same responses from the ping, ie: nothing. It correctly states the IP address that DHCP has assigned so it is obviously talking to the router but will not respond to pings.
I have re-checked the router set up and it looks fine. I think I will have to get my other laptop out and log into the router while suse is running on the problem laptop.
Incidentally, if I boot the machine with the Knoppix Live CD then everything works as it should but if I use the suse live CD then it doesn't. On previous installs with Mandriva 2005 and 2006, I had the same problem as I am having now.
Please help! _________________ It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

OK lets try and see whether it is something your router is 'saying' I don't know whether you have Ethereal installed or not, but if you don't it may be worth installing it, even if you only remove it after you are done.
Run that as soon as you get into the Desktop environment, set it to capture on device eth0 and then open firefox, try and use firefox until it stops working (a few seconds realistically)
Interesting that from a console you get nothing, although it may just be that SuSe starts something alongside the Desktop that you need.
If knoppix works then its possible that it is a driver issue, can you post the output of
lsmod
and
lspci
please?
Hopefully we'll figure it out soon enough. _________________ Need a New Signature |

Outputs as requested.
I have also pasted the output from ifconfig so you can see that it does obtain an IP address from the router via DHCP. Also, I used my other laptop to log into the router and verified that the router can see the linux PC and it can!! So I still don't understand what is happening.
I opened a console session from the logon screen just to double check but there was still no responses to any ping commands to the router. When I tried to ping the linux laptop from the windows laptop it just kept dropping the packets.

OK so it looks like the ip_tables modules are running, which means it is more than possible that the SuSe firewall is causing the issues. It SuSe have started shipping locked down then this may explain this issue, A while back I completely closed all my ports for incoming traffic, result was when i restarted the router would assign me a DHCP address but then forget about me, its possible that this is happening to you.
Ok can you post the output from
iptables --list
you will probably need to run that as root.
I think it is likely to show a rule that is causing the issue.
