Let me say, first of all, realplayer may not be highly admired but
real media streams do exist on the internet and one may reasonably want to play them

Right so ubunu 9.04 installs ok but then I come to the part that I want to install realplayer

First of all, it isn't in the repos (helix player may be but I don't think that works too well)

but it can be installed from realplayer11gold.deb
(click terminal arrow during install)

And will play rm files on disk when u click on properties and set to open with realplayer without sound!

OK there is a fix for that:

There is sometimes an issue with Pulse audio sound. Set Realplay to use OSS in tools->preferences->hardware->audio driver

Then type

sudo gedit /opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay

( sudo gedit /usr/lib/realplay-11.0.0/realplay )

then on line 52 change

$HELIX_LIBS/realplay.bin "$@"

to

padsp -n RealPlayer -m RealPlayerStream $HELIX_LIBS/realplay.bin "$@"

now rm disk player will play with video and sound

Next to firefox and attempt to play links to realmedia broadcasts
unfortunately totem has been set up to do this and fails and interferes so nothing gets played

In short, I removed everything to do with totem (and rhythm box just in case)
and at last I can play realmedia offerings

Only not much left in terms of a general media player
so installed VLC which seems to cope – libdvdcss2 needs to be installed for DVD play though

At last unbuntu JJ and multimedia – but simple?

A fair bit more so if u ignore realplayer

But too much mucking around

You could have disabled the totem plug-in in FF i prefer the gecko-mediaplayer myself it handles RealPlayer sites ok.

Enjoy the Choice Smile

True, realplayer is not in the four Ubuntu repositories, but it is in Medibuntu. I always now enable the medibuntu repository as a matter of routine. You can get libdvdcss2 from there too.

For w32codecs you don't have to get the Medibuntu version. They come in with the ubuntu-restricted-extras package which I also always install now as a matter of routine.

Thanks for replies

Ubuntu 9.04 seems to think that they have set up totem to deal with realmedia needs, so how well does it do?

1).rm files – nope
2)links to realmedia video – video but no sound (on my system)
3)links to realmedia audio – yup ok

So that's 1.5 out of 3

Have described realplayer itself with vlc in previous post – one can get there

(gnome) mplayer with gecko-mediaplayer, as suggested

that just about works – seems to download rm file to temp disk file first and windowing a little clumsy but it does the job

Gnome mplayer not the best for dvd play, I would argue, 'cos it doesn't seem to start when dvd inserted, must start player first then call it from there. Also seems to play at low volume

So two methods above. Is there a third way?

I have to say that using gxine with its plugin also installed, instead of above seems to work pretty well.

Maybe rhytym box for online radio – is there a better app for gnome internet radio?

Anyway, hope this may be of interest to somebody. Coming with loads of multimedia apps installed may not be such a good thing if u have to change them.
