Problem with Synaptic

Gives the error message;
E: dpkg was interupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open()failed, please report.

So I close Synaptic, open up an Xfce Terminal,

alex@armani:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for alex:

Aha, tia from Alex.
PS I'd like to try The KDE Desktop next. How can I do this without Synaptic?
