You don't say what kind of Internet connection you have, but assuming it is a domestic setup, your connection from the router to the computer should have no real impact on download speeds.

Either the router is broken, unlikely, your network card is misconfigured, not very likely, or your ethernet cable is faulty/damaged. That's the most likely cause and the reason I suggested trying a different cable.

If it does the same with another cable, post the results of these terminal commands

sudo mii-tool eth0
sudo lspci | grep -i ethernet

degradation, BUT, does this start from INT 19 therefore
making BIOS a bottleneck?

I didn't say there IS performance degradation, I said there can be performance degradation if you don't align partitions with the blocks. This is at a higher level than the BIOS and the performance comes back if you start your partitions 512B later on the disk.

Wow, is all I can say.

I was looking up the article written by Gina Trappani on Google Apps (as its something I'm becoming more and more familiar with in our attempts to migrate to Google Apps at work) and I was pointed to the fact that once the latest issue is out, the old ones are archived as free PDF's

WOW
Posted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:46 pm

Just wanted to compliment Graham Morrison on doing a fantastic write-up of Linux audio in his article in Issue 130. This is the kind of article that I find worthwhile because it brings understanding, rather than the "type in this incantation and say the magic words, don't worry about why" ones. Chris Brown's articles are also good in this respect.

What puzzles me is that after all the dire warnings about audio is a mess, and melting pot of instability, he proceeds to show that it all makes perfect sense - far from being a mess! My own experience with audio is that most of the "mess" is created by advice from people who don't understand how things are meant to work, so they try to fight it and reduce the distro's finely tuned packages to rubble; then they complain that audio doesn't work. Case in point is the people whose first advice is to (completely unnecessarily) uninstall Pulseaudio, followed by many suggestions as to how to fix what they have now broken.

OK, after the compliments, can I say that the article whetted my appetite for more details and how-to's. I'd like to suggest that he follow this with a series of articles on the individual pieces. For me the most interesting would be Jack, Pulseaudio and Alsa covering their UI in more detail, as well as advice for setting them up and fixing common problems. For instance, what do all those cryptic names in the ALSA mixer mean ?

Another thing I'd love to see covered is tuning a machine for minimum latency and curing xruns. These are topics on which there is a huge amount of the "magic command" type of advice, much of which is not actually correct (e.g. NICE settings are commonly recommended, but have nothing to do with audio performance). If Graham can cut through the sound architecture jungle like this and distill it down to crystal clarity, then get him to take his machete and cut through the audio setup jungle in similar style.

Just on a personal note, I have my Asus Aspire netbook set up as a portable recording studio and sound workshop, and it is jaw-droppingly awesome (with the aid of a decent quality USB interface and Ubuntu Netbook Remix + audio apps). The most amazing advert for Linux - I love watching the faces when someone is looking for a guitar tuner and I start up fmit and point it at them.

Had lots of issues in the past with ATI drivers, just not nice to install compared to NVidia ones if you don't use the repositories like I don't.

I'd say NVidia too. Had two ATI cards and one NVidia, no real issues with the NVidia other then it gets a little hot due to only passive cooling. Could do with more fans in my tower.

Not sure what they come with default but you will be able to remove OpenOffice if you want and install whatever you want, such as abiword, etc.

You won't want mythbuntu but any others are game. Other distros you might want to consider are ubuntu (lbuntu is based on ubuntu), mint, etc (mikeos?)

Just try some in live mode and see what takes your fancy!

The problem with Dan's Guardian is that the black lists are commercially licensed - http://dansguardian.org/?page=blacklist.

I raised this issue when the article was published, a better, totally open source option is SquidGuard with the lists from Shalla Secure Services (who maintain SquidGuard now). There is currently 1690287 entries in the blacklists and these have all been manually submitted and then checked by a person so it is very accurate.

So I wonder if clarifying this expression using double quotes is practicable.
